The Surrey village of Oatlands is positioned in the north of the county close to the Thames. The nearby Tudor and Stuart Palace of Oatlands gave the village its name, and the local Oatlands Park was the venue for its racecourse. Racing first took place at Oatlands on Friday 6th July 1827 with an 8 race programme. The opening race was a match in which Captain Locke’s Laburn defeated Mr B Hughes’ Elephanta. It was the start of a superb day for Captain Locke, winning 4 of the races and coming second in the other 4. The feature race each year was the Oatland Stakes which was won on the final occasion by Mr Osbaldeston’s Apuntador. Annual meetings continued for 4 more years until a final meeting on Wednesday 15th June 1831 when the Gold Cup was won by Tiresias who beat Apuntador. |
